Roscomare has partnered with Upstage Theatre Schools for the 5th year to offer after-school performing arts education. Upstage puts on professional productions with Directors, Choreographers, musical directors, and brings in stage equipment to enhance our stage and lighting. Each year our programs sell out, and result in sold-out smash hits. We plan to have our show outdoor this year but may move it indoors if approved by LAUSD.
Upstage Theatre productions feature ensemble casting, and an environment for the child to find their own level in their own time. Their overall objective is for the student to feel joyful and creatively fulfilled when performing, and their hope is that all students grow in confidence, make new friends and learn new skills.
Play Description:

“Oh, the thinks you can think” when Dr. Seuss’ best-loved characters collide and cavort in an unforgettable musical caper!

Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in Seussical KIDS, a fantastical musical extravaganza from Tony-winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once on This Island, Ragtime).

Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat, our narrator, tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child, who gets in trouble for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton’s challenge is twofold — not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must also guard an abandoned egg that’s been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!

Seussical KIDS is great fun for the whole family. Young performers will be excited to portray the characters from the popular Dr. Seuss books.

Here are some questions answered:

Will rehearsals be indoors or outdoors at Roscomare?

We plan to hold rehearsals indoors in the auditorium and some outdoors. Parents should send students to school with a hat to protect them from the sun and keep them cool on hot days. As it gets colder, students should be sent to school with a jacket.

How will my child get to class?

Kindergarten and 1st graders will be picked up from their teachers by Upstage staff. 2nd graders will walk themselves to the class.

How will children be grouped?

Children will be grouped in their grade level (groups of 10-15 students) as often as possible with a single instructor. Each instructor will rotate to each group. When children are doing scenes, students will not be in their grade level but will remain socially distant.

Will students wear masks?

Yes, at this time students will need to wear their mask at all times unless they are taking a water break.  If LAUSD rules change and remove masks, this program will follow LAUSD rules.

Is there a snack break?

There are no snack breaks during the rehearsal, however, students can enjoy a snack sent from home at the lunch tables after school lets out prior to the start of class.

When are the shows?

The shows will be Friday, August 29th at 4pm and Saturday August 30 at 2pm.

Where will the shows take place?

We are prepared to have the shows outdoors with a stage, sound and some lighting (even though it is during daylight hours).  The show will be less than an hour long, and all guests will need to wear masks and will need to provide vaccination cards OR covid tests within 48 hours — note, restrictions may change based on current city, state and LAUSD rules.  If city, state and LAUSD rules allow it, it is possible we will move the show indoors to the auditorium.

Will students wear masks during the show?

Yes, currently students will wear masks during the show unless LAUSD mask rules change (there is discussion of possible changes)- regardless, there will be microphones to hear them.

How will students change into costumes if they are outdoors?

Students will wear shorts and shirts under all costumes so will not need privacy changing.

What if my child is quarantined?

Materials for that week’s rehearsals will be made available online for your student to access.

What if a child appears ill when they come to class?

If one of the teachers notices that a child appears ill when they arrive to class, even if the student indicates they feel ok, a parent will be called to pick them up without delay.

Where will I pick up my child after class?

Parents will drive up to the front of school at 3:35 on Tuesdays and 4:35 on Thursdays to pick up their child. All parents need to be on time as staff is not scheduled to stay after pick up. Please put your child’s name in your front windshield and your child will be brought to your car. Parents cannot get out of their car and are not allowed on campus to pick up.
